WINTER MONTHS IN MALLORCA
Why come to Mallorca for the winter months
First of all I would like to clarify the concept of “Ghost Town”. We hear it so many times – Puerto Pollensa will be a Ghost town. A Ghost town is where there are literally no places open. You don´t see a soul when you walk out on the street. This is what I have experienced one winter in La Manga, South Spain. There was one pizzeria place open!
Puerto Pollensa has over 7000 official habitants. There are thousands of families, with children. There are 2 schools and a high school. There are banks, cafes, supermarkets, restaurants, shops …..Please stop saying that Puerto Pollensa is a Ghost Town because it is far from the truth.
So why would you come to Puerto Pollensa and Pollensa for the winter months?
First of all the weather.
From October to January we can enjoy some lovely sunny days. The temperatures can vary from 30 degrees to 14 during the day. Great for activities such as walking, cycling, hiking, mountain biking, sailing….which Mallorca is so well known for. At night you might want to take the chill off by lighting a log fire in one of our villas or putting the heating on.
February and March can be the coldest months with sometimes snow up in Lluc! Still the temperatures are great around 10 degrees
Secondly – the ambience and the fiestas.
I believe Mallorca is the king of the fiestas and they know how to do their fiestas here. Do click for the whole calendar of most fiestas in Mallorca here.
In October we enjoy Halloween each year this fiesta is greater and greater! Check out our photos for 2022!
November we have the lovely fair in Pollensa. Which lasts for a hole weekend! Watch Pollensa turn into a fun fair!
I love November when the shops start to fill up with Turrón (a traditional nougat eaten throughout the xmas holidays.
All the lights will be switched on in Palma around the 26th of November – beautiful and great ambiance.
December celebrate the first week of Christmas with two big bank holidays the 6th and the 8th. Lots of things going on and great food in the restaurants.
On the 24th most families will celebrate the birth of Jesus. Families gather and have a good meal. Many of the restaurants have a special menu, but do make sure you book. Also there is a midnight mass or misa del gallo.
On the 25th because Pollensa/ Port is so international with many expats and different nationalities its very easy to Celebrate an English Christmas day. Enjoy a morning coffee or midday glass of buck fizz on the beach! There has not been a Christmas were the sun hasn´t been shinning! Many of the English local restaurants have a traditional Christmas menu.
31st of December – Big celebration in Spain. The restaurants again will put on a special menu and provide your 12 grapes, one for every dong of the bell! Have good luck for the year! Many people in the Port will enjoy Stay restaurant they even have a DJ. We love going to the square in Pollensa. But note that it will be a late night so pace yourself!
Just when you think everything is over……No way! January is one of the busiest months!
The night of the 5th of January join in one of the many processions where the 3 kings arrive. In Puerto Pollensa they are usually on horseback. In Alcudia they arrive by boat! And Pollensa have also their own procession! The atmosphere of all the excited children in anticipation is unique. The children receive their presents that night. The 6th is like Christmas day for them! Enjoy a roscon de reyes (traditional cake).
Then we have a few days to recover until the 16th of January. Great weekend with drums, fireworks, bonfires and tree climbing! What? Tree climbing? Yes! This must be one of my favorite fiestas in the whole of Mallorca.
The 19th San Sebastian is celebrated in Palma and many of the other local villages.
So if you needed an excuse as to whether you should come to Puerto Pollensa or Pollensa during the winter months we hope we have helped you!
